Q: What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.
I don’t know if I’d call my big pet peeves actual writing devices, or just errors. You be the judge. The first is overstated, overdone dialog. I really don’t know how to describe this, other than that the dialog is used more to tell the story than the words are and it’s just completely wrong that someone is saying all this stuff because who does that in real life??? Maybe you know what I mean, maybe you don’t, but it drives me nuts!
Second is the insta-love love triangle. Twilight, I’m talking to you here. I’m not saying that this doesn’t make for some pretty engrossing reads, but it gets old really quickly IMO.
