Title: A Game of Thrones
Author: George R. R. Martin
Where I got it: As a gift
Goodreads Summary:
From a master of contemporary fantasy comes a novel of imaginative power unlike any you've ever encountered...
In A Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin has created a genuine masterpiece, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill the pages of the first volume in an epic series sure to delight fantasy fans everywhere.
In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

My Thoughts:
Check out that summary?! Doesn’t it just make you want to run out and buy the book??? Ok, well it made me want to run out and buy the book, especially with all the hype over the new HBO series. No, I haven’t watched the series, I don’t have HBO and I’m not willing to pay for it for one show. Plus, I would rather watch on DVD when it comes out.
Anyway, enough rambling. This book was long so there’s really no good way to summarize it, but it was full of epic awesomeness!!!!! My only complaint was that there were so many characters that it was hard to keep them all straight at times, with the families and rivalries and thrones and… You get the point. But, although that was challenging, it wasn’t hard to follow the book overall, and even if you lost track of a character for a minute, it was easy to contextually pick back up on what was going on.
For a sci-fi/fantasy book, this has everything a nerd girl could possibly want. Politics (and by the way, aren’t fictional politics so much more interesting than real politics?!), romance, battles, magic, magical creatures, things that go bump in the night, love, loyalty… Oh. My. Gosh. I could nerd on about this story forever. I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!!! I couldn’t put this book down, so whether you’ve seen the TV show or not, I highly suggest you go out and get your hands on this book – STAT!
